Beautiful striped-colored houses in Costa Nova are located within the municipality of Aveiro, about 9 miles from the city center. These multi-colored striped houses are called Palheiros. In the past, these were simple buildings used by fishermen for shelter and storage of fishing accessories, and the material of the houses consisted of straw and reeds. When Costa Nova became a popular seaside resort, the owners of the houses began to rent them out for the summer. In order to increase the attraction of the buildings to tourists, they were remodeled, turned into real houses and the facades were painted in bright stripes, inspired by the colorful boats of Ria. Now the houses are one of the most colorful attractions of the city, which gives you the impression of being in the street with dollhouses or on an old aesthetic postcard.
