The Southern Alps are located in New Zealand, covering an area of about 14,172 sq mi. There are about 20 peaks in this mountain system, and the highest point is Mount Cook with a height of 12,218 ft. A characteristic feature of the Southern Alps is the almost complete absence of any settlements at high altitudes. The mountains also gained fame due to the film adaptation of Peter Jackson's novel of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was filmed in New Zealand, and its picturesque landscapes became the best scenery for the film.
