Shashlik is a multinational dish. Its history has not a single century, and it's impossible to say in which country it was first prepared. This dish consists of pieces of poultry, pork, beef, or lamb strung on skewers and roasted on the grill. In almost every country, you can find a variation of this dish, where the type of meat and spices used differ. For example, in Armenia this dish is called khorovats, in Azerbaijan – kebab, in Turkey – shish kebab, and in Thailand – satay. The word "shashlik" itself comes from the Crimean Tatar "şış" which means spit.
