Fall colors or fall foliage is a phenomenon by which green leaves change the color to various shades of yellow, orange, red, purple, and brown in autumn. Along with the green pigment (chlorophyll) are hidden yellow (xanthophylls) and orange (beta –carotene) pigments. Most of the year, these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring. But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible.
