The lakes in winter have a special, breathtaking beauty that creates a magical atmosphere and a desire to skate on the icy surface. If the lake is small, then in the frost the water in it can freeze to the very bottom. However, on most lakes, only an ice crust appears at the top, and the rest of the water under it just becomes colder. Why is this happening? The fact is that at a water temperature of 40 °F, its density acquires a maximum value and sinks to the bottom of the reservoir. The water that remains on the surface cools to lower temperatures, becoming less light and subsequently turning into ice, which does not allow the water under it to drop to lower temperatures.
